If you have the following two keywords defined:
"my product red"
"my product"
Which keyword will Google pick if someone search on:
the my product red
or
my product red new
Thx,
Chris

the my product red
my product red new
Both 'keywords' contain the phrase "my product red", so that's the one Google will pick...
The most logical way of determing what keyword will be picked is by using the following order of keyword types:
1) negative
2) exact
3) phrase
4) broad
I.e.: Google will probably first check if the search terms match one of your negative keywords,.. if so: then it will not display your ad,.. if not: it will continue and check if they match an exact phrase in your keyword list... if so: Google will pick that one,. if not it will continue further down the list and check for phrase match,... and so on...

It will pick the longest: "my product red"..
I'm using such keywords (the basic keyword + longer derivations) in my own campaigns, and the longer keywords do get clicks...
Adding specific keywords like "my product red", "buy my product", "my product green version" can be very useful when using any form of conversion tracking.
If Google would pick the shortest keyword in your list, then all your longer derivations wouldn't get any clicks (and no conversion data).

Again basnl you make a lot of sense.
You are probably right the highest match % is certainly the way google enginneer would have built this.
Thanks,
Chris
