Articles that have new and original content can be a quick force for driving traffic. Blogging is another quick source for traffic generation also.

With that said: SEO needs to be a part of the well written article, blog or web page to obtain the results of traffic increase.

Directory submission is by far the best way to get traffic. A friend of mine uses almost only directory submissions and she now ranks number 1 on google for 'work from home' - which is amazing.
Pretty hard doing it manually though you'd need a good directory submitter program.

You Tube is the latest way to drive enourmous amounts of traffic to your site.

I tried this method a long time ago till Google threatened to close my Adsense account - when I tried to "discuss" the details they just didn´t reply. Needless to say I stopped.

In any case: how does this traffic result for you?

I mean: 4 hours!? for 1000 clicks.
Depending on the clicks (quality) they can be purchased for less than a dollar.
You could flip hamburgers for the 4 hours and still be up 20 bucks !

Just do your homework on SEO :

Link Partners (There are free link exchange scripts)
Blogging (Add a blog to your site or creat a blog and link to your site)
Anchor Text (Terms which you want your links to say for SEO purposes)
Article Creation (Create articles and post them to article directories and other webmasters will add them to their site and it results in backlinks)
Directory Submissions (Lot's of webmaster's create directories, other alternative is to create a directory for all your sites as well)
Buy an Existing Domain (lot of domain names expire that still have traffice and backlinks - buy one and build around it - not free, but it's a proven method that has traffic)
Forum Links (sign up to forums and post, create links in your signature)

You might well know your subject, but do you kow what draws people into your subject and what would interest them while on your website?

According to Perry Marshal you should experiment with Adwords PPC and find out what the keywords/phrases are that interest people and draw them to your site.

THEN: use these successful kw/phrases/themes as part of / focus of your SEO work on your site.

Squidoo must have your link.
Find (high traffic)places to post your links
Google PR algorithm is based mostly on the number of incoming links.

The most common ways of getting backlinks are thru social bookmarking, directory submissions, submitting to press release sites, forum sigs, etc. etc.. What's important from an SEO point of view is getting relevant and quality (organic / natural) back links. You get this if you provide very good content that would make other sites want to link to your site. Also having back links to high PR sites helps your site on PR building as well.

On a marketing perspective IMO, having more targetted link backs is very important as these yields the highest conversion rate. In general, the more link backs you have - the more exposure your site gets - the more chances you get traffic from these back links ;)

But are there any traffic?. Must be because those advertisers in the right comlumn paid Google for the keywords. Is it enough traffic?. I don't think so.

So find the keywords that people are looking for and do the exact same thing. Wait! what about competition?. The lower the competition the better your ad is positioned.

So how do you find it out?. Use Googles keyword tool.

I would have to agree about article marketing. I use Ezine Articles the most, then Go Articles and Article City. I seem to see the most traffic from Ezine Articles, plus I know they have a good page rank and backlinks from them will help with SEO. The more articles you write the better.

Blogging is good. Squidoo lenses that can point to your site are easy to make and get indexed really fast.
You might spend a few minutes a day surfing at the free traffic sites.
Those are my favorites.
