How to lower your cost and increase your profits.
Heres what worked for me.

I use my own landing pages. I go after the "low hanging fruit" on popular products and I use content matching.

I reworked my landing pages, targetting particular keywords with content. I might have 2 or 3 landing pages per product.

I reworked my adgroups and got rid of the high cost keywords that were killing my ROI. I used Googles Keyword tool in Adwords, chose Cost and ad position, put in my MAX CPC, say .15 and then added the keywords that showed some search volume. Keep about 25 keywords per adgroup highly targetted to your ad and landing page.

I also use content bidding on most adgroups set my price very low, say .08.

I get less clickthrus, which means fewer costs and sales have held about the same and some have gone up.

So you use the content network of AdWords? It helps reduce the cost for keywords and you're not getting a lot of untargeted traffic?

Just trying to clarify what you are saying.

Thanks.

Sounds good. Thanks for sharing!

I agree, taking the time to target each landing page closer to the keyword phrase can yield better results.

I've noticed that a lot of Adwords advertisers are turning off the content network. I agree that this has risks from click fraud but untargetted? No, I think it's pretty targetted.

The big advantage of content network now is that the costs are very low. You can get plenty of 0.03 and 0.04 traffic while the search network is costing 0.2 or 0.25.

I always read people going one way or another about the content network, and the fact of the matter is you can't figure out a way to monetize it, there is a line of people behind you that will.

If you don't need to use it to continually grow your income from Adwords, then don't mess with it if it's too much trouble, that's my advice.

I just changed my display url 4 hrs ago to match a keyword and the clickthroughs have gone through the roof...still waiting on more sales though.

I've been using the content network because Google has raised my
minimum bid to $5 or $10 on most of my keywords for the search
network. I was getting some sales and making a modest profit from the
content network. Looks like that may have stopped now also. My traffic
from the content network dropped to almost nothing today, so I went
to the Webmasterword forums. People there have been saying that
Google is now applying the same quality score requirements to the
content network as they have been with the search network. Looks like it
may be over for me with Google. When I see some of the ads showing on
Adwords, I just cannot believe how some of these ads are getting
approved, see my other post here:

I'm just frustrated with Google to no end.

I had some decent campaigns going awhile back and they were making some decent earnings... and then POOF! Google rolls out the quality landing page thing.

I tried making my ads more relevant, added a keyword to my url, made sure my landing page had the keywords in them... but to no avail.

My bid prices shot up to the point I couldn't keep a decent ROI.

What really bothers me is the campaigns where I have little competition (only a few bidders for those keywords) and Google pulls the plug on me.

It's like they don't want my money. If they only have 4 companies bidding for that term and I'm willing to be the 5th one bidding even a low amount you think they would let me bid on that term.

Of course they will... but at a very steep price.

Oh well... at least I can at least keep promoting my products thru the free classified sites and make a few bucks every month part-time!
