Hi everyone,
Just thought I would share this. Google sitemap is very useful for new sites submitted to Google (which is me as I am new and my site is new). I was counting days till my site got listed and had no clue I could speed it up so easily.
Well, few days ago I found out about Google sitemap on Google's webmaster tool. I looked into technical details and totally freaked out. I am not a programmer and it would probably take me days to figure it out. Then I watched a DVD that I had sitting on my desk for over a month now and it turned out it only takes about 5 minutes and does not require any programming knowledge.
So I wrote down the steps and here they are: go to http://www.google.com/webmasters, click on Webmaster Tools (including Sitemaps) link Login to your Google account if you have one, if you don’t simply create one. Type in your site’s URL (e.g. http://www.yoursite.com) into “Add Site” field. Click on “Sitemap” tab. Next click on “Add Sitemap”, choose “Add General Web Sitemap” in “Choose type” drop-down menu. Next open another window, do a search for “Google Sitemap Generator”. A whole bunch of free ones will come up. Just pick one and follow the steps described (normally all you’d need to do it type in your URL and click “start”. Your web site will be crawled and an xml sitemap file would be created. Now you need to click “download” button and save it in your web site root folder (that’s very important!). After that upload sitemap.xml site you your server and submit it to Google by giving them the path for your sitemap (e.g. http://www.yoursite.com/sitemap.xml).
If you are using DreamWeaver, there is a free extension called Google sitemap generator which yo can download and use to generate your site maps.
After I submitted my sitemap, it got approved within minutes and immediately my site description was changed to th new one (I was waiting for it for weeks!).
Hopefully this will help with indexing your new sites :-)
