With ringtone maker software readily available on the net why is the ringtone industry still such a profitable market? Anyone with a destop and software can make their own tones at no cost. On average ringtone consumers download at least 1 new ringtone every week most cell phone service providers offer ringtone plans for as little as 9.95/week(119.40/year) which allows you to download 1 new tone every week from a limited library...whereas ringtone maker software retails 19.95 and you can download as many tones as you like from any CD or MP3 in your library....seems like a no brainer to have the software to me.

I can make a sandwhich, but I still go to Subway. Many people don't want to make their own ringtones because they don't have the time, motivation, or skill. However, for those that do then I think it's a great alternative.

What I think is incredibly sleazy are those ads you see on Myspace and places where young people frequent...you know the ones "Shoot the monkey and win a free ringtone"....and then when you signup and give them your phone number and email address, they automatically bill you 9.95 a month (fine print that no one reads) for "exclusive ringtones"....and of course 12 year old kids dont realize this fact. Very underhanded.

I so love cricket, he makes me smile!
Miles is right though, it's all about convenience, why do we buy tomatoes when we can grow them..why do we do a lot of things.
If everybody took the time to do it themselves, learn it themselves or find it themselves, we'd all be out of money!

You have a great question...but
Here is something that has helped me tremendously...Don't ever assume that everybody thinks like you...think about how your target demographic thinks...better yet research how your target demographic thinks.
Untold fortunes have been made by people that saw an opportunity where others did not...
For example...the whole 7/11 convienience store idea was poo pooed...and they could barely get any financing...because the ones who were not thinking like a consumer thought "Why would anybody pay almost twice as much for a gallon of milk or candy bar at a 7/11 than they would pay at a supermarket?"
Well we know the rest of the story. We DO pay because the convienience store is just that...convienient...it is closer...the lines are shorter...and we usually pass one on the way home from work.

Thanks Travis and Miles you answered my question perfectly, we Americans love convienece ad we're willing to pay for it. and mrosson you are right those my space ads are horrible especially for kids but your combined insight just gave me a bright idea as far as my demographic....ringtone maker software probably not for the mainstream yet but for those that prefer original music/tones Thanks Guys. PS Travis your Bum Marketing strategies are awesome forming article campaigns as we speak.
