Well based on my experience, it's making sure all the basics are covered well:
-excellent selection of marketing tools
-proper tracking and timely payouts
-personalized support from affiliate managers
-and probably most importantly, a product that actually converts ;)

I've tried a few affiliate programs and have had zero success with them, despite the affiliate manager's claims that it converts really well. I think what that means is that a program that converts well does so because:

1) there is sufficient demand for the product
2) you know how to market the product

I'm certain that you could take the crappiest product in the world, but if you know how to market it well, you can sell it. I've bought products for my own use from Clickbank that apparently converts very well, but it turns out that the product is crap and the only reason I bought it was because of the hype.

But that's what marketing is all about, right? The ability to sell? If you understand the principles of selling, you can sell anything and make money at it, as long as you are able to find a captive audience.

I think the one big thing I would add here is that you want it to be a product/program that is in your niche. If you don't have the capability to market it successfully, of if it's not going to fit in with the rest of your offerings, than it may not be successful for you.
