Hey Guys Ive been hearing alot about making sure you have trackback links, or backlinks to your webpage or blog. I am fairly new to all this and I want to make sure I understand it better. What exactly does it mean to have a back link?

Hello Mkresge17

Consider your website as an island, in order for people to reach your island, they have to travel from somewhere else.. another island.
They will need a path from the other island to yours.
The path can be seen as a link.

The more paths that you have coming into your island, the more visitors you are likely to have.

If the other island is similiar to yours, the more likely the visitors from the other island will visit your island.

This is largely how Google ranks the popularity of your island.

The number of incoming links from similiar sites..

So inorder to increase your island traffic, is mostly about links links, and more links

I'll borrow that analogy if I may. Google will look at your island and then look to see how many bridges have been built to it by people on other islands. If they've taken the time to build a bridge to your island then it must be worth visiting.

This analogy breaks down a bit in that bridges are two way structures where a back link can be one way, and those are the ones that carry the greatest weight.

They should also be context related.
